Specifications: The HP model comes with a 2.2Ghz processor, 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. The Apple laptop on the other hand has a 2.53Ghz processor, 4GB RAM and a smaller 250GB hard drive. The Apple model also has a better 15.4-inch HD display. It has a 1440 x 900 resolution as opposed to HP’s 1366 x 768 resolution on this model. Both model come with the latest OS (Windows 7 and Snow Leopard respectively). Overall, the Apple model is the more powerful laptop model. Winner: Apple MacBook Pro MC118LL/A.

Design: The HP sports a classic laptop design, with a glossy black look and silver linings. Apple on the other hand tried to bring the work ‘cool’ to a whole new level. The HP model does have some edge to it with its circular patterns. For the sake of objectivity (since looks is largely a matter of taste), these two models will be compared in terms of size and weight. The 15.6-inch laptop model measures at 14.35 x 9.82 x 0.95 inches, while the HP laptop is a little thicker, measuring at 14.9 x 10.15 x 1.33 inches. The Apple laptop is also much lighter at 5.5 pounds (as opposed to the 6.34 pounds on the HP laptop). Winner: Apple MacBook Pro MC118LL/A.

Price: The price of both laptop models will be weighed against their features and performance. Both models have their own unique features. The DVD drive on the HP laptop for instance has LightScribe that lets you burn labels onto discs. It also has a larger hard drive. The Apple model on the other hand has a multi touch touch-pad and an illuminated keyboard. The batteries on the Apple laptop can last up to 7 hours on a single charge (4 hours on the HP model). Overall, it is evident that the Apple MacBook Pro MC118LL/A is a slightly better laptop. Nevertheless, it is currently price at $1679 per unit. The HP Pavilion DV6-1350US on the other hand retails for around $649 each. It would be a little of a stretch to say that the Apple laptop is worth the extra $1000 (unless you have the extra cash to spare). Winner: HP Pavilion DV6-1350US.

Apple Inc. – Yahoo! News Photos

A man tries out the new iPhone 3GS on the first day it is being sold in Spain at the company's store in downtown Madrid in this June 19, 2009 file photo.

If your love Apple designs and have some extra cash to spare, you should not hesitate to get yourself an Apple product. Whether it is an MP3 player, a desktop or a laptop, every Apple machine is head and shoulders above other brands in many ways. Of course, the extra features do come with a heavy premium (a much higher price tag).

Currently, the Apple MacBook Pro MB470LL/A 15.4-inch laptop is one of my favorite notebooks in the market. Although I like this model mainly for its good looks, its beautiful exterior does hide many powerful features on the inside. For starters, it is powered by a 2.4Ghz processor from Intel an has 250GB of storage. It also comes with 2GB of DDR3 RAM (max of 4GB) and NVDIA GeForce 9400 graphic cards.

Weighing at just 5.5 pounds, the Apple MacBook Pro MB470LL/A 15.4-inch Laptop pretty light for a 15-inch model. Like all the models in the latest MacBook range, it has a light aluminum frame and a beautiful 15-inch glossy LED display. Despite feeling a little lighter than usual, it feels very solid and durable.

The new Apple MacBook Pro MB470LL/A 15.4-inch laptop also has a new improved glass track pad that is 40% larger and comes with Apple’s multi-touch feature. It has a new lithium-polymer battery that can give up to 5 hours of use on a single charge. The keyboard also sports a couple of new features. Typing on it feels really good and it has back-lights to help you type in the dark.

As mentioned earlier, the Apple MacBook Pro MB470LL/A 15.4-inch laptop has a pretty steep price tag. Is it worth its price? Many features on this model can be found on many cheaper models (from other brands) in the market. The premium that you pay for the MacBook will be for its cutting edge design, user-friendly interface and the priceless ‘cool-factor’. In my books, it is absolutely worth it!

Before we you start, I should mention that I have not always been a fan of Apple computers. In fact it was as recent as last year when I thought that Apple PCs were nothing more than overpriced and over-hyped computers. It was only when I used my sister’s MacBook for about a week (I had no choice as my laptop broke down) that I got hooked. The Mac OS is just so much more user-friendly and much more easier to use. It takes a while getting used to but once you get a hang of it, it is much easier to use than the Windows OS. I am now the prove owner of an Apple MacBook Pro MB990LL/A 13.3-inch laptop!

First of all, let me just say that the new generation of Apple MacBook Pro is just a completely different species of laptop. Weather it is in its design, construction or performance, the MacBook Pro is head and shoulders above most Windows based laptops. Many leading tech publications have declared the Apple MacBook Pro as the best range of laptops for 2009! My 13.3-inch MacBook is powered by a 2.26Ghz processor. It has a 160GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM.

Although this set of specs may not seem like much, but tests have confirmed that multitasking speeds and the speed in running heavy applications (like Photoshop) are much faster on an Apple computer compared with other non-Apple laptops with the same specs. This is due to the built-in design of the Mac system. As for portability, the battery on the 13.3-inch model can last to an impressive 7 hours. With all the specs and tech stuff aside the Apple MacBook Pro is just very fun to use. It is very stylish and has given me such a pleasurable computing experience like none other. To all non-Apple laptops users out there; if you ever decide to take a leap of faith to get yourself your first Apple PC, the Apple MacBook Pro (MB990LL/A) 13.3-inch laptop would be a great way to go!

What Can I Do With My Macbook Motion Sensor?

If you have recently purchased a Macbook with a motion sensor, you are probably versed on what this handy device is meant to do. As laptop users, we are very accustomed to the idea that our laptops are frequently at risk. They can get knocked off our desks or even our laps through clumsiness or accident, and this can be catastrophic for our hard drives! A Macbook motion sensor can go a long way towards mitigating the damage through figuring out when the laptop is in motion and by stopping the drive from spinning, thus protecting it as it hits. This can save a lot of data and let you walk away from an accident with little more than a scare. On the other hand, have you heard about what else a Macbook pro sudden motion sensor can help you do?

One unorthodox use that people have found for their Macbook sensor is that they can use it to turn their Macbook into a lightsaber! With the MacSaber application, you can connect your Macbook motion sensor to sound effects that let you mimic the sounds that the Jedi made when swinging their signature weapons. A fast swing and a slow on will have very different results, and you will find that this can go a long way towards keeping you entertained when you have a laptop and some space to swing it.

If you are more interested in keeping your Macbook in a stationary position, why not think about turning it into a seismograph? Even if you don’t live in a place that is prone to earthquakes, you can use the Macbook pro motion sensor to keep track of the reverbrations around you. When you put the SeisMac application on your computer, you will discover that it can be responsive to any movement that is made around it, whether you are tapping on the table or stomping your foot. You can even use this application to record movements and to find out if anyone moved your laptop!

For a more practical purpose for your Macbook motion sensor, you will find that a certain combination of command line tools will allow you to skip between applications with a single tap to your computer. Through the use of the AMSTracker utility and script system that lets you use this utility to trigger key presses, you will find that it can make skipping between work and play much more simple!

Take some time and really consider what your options are when it comes t
1000
o make the most out of your Macbook motion sensor. Sure, it can protect your hard drive, but you can also have a lot of fun with it!

The Pci Express Overview

Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) is a computer bus designed for attaching hardware devices within a computer. The PCI interface is common in today’s computers, and largely considered to be a ubiquitous internal PC connection. PCI-SIG, the industry organization chartered to develop and manage the PCI standard, released the PCI 1.0 specification in 1992. It was a component-level specification. The next year, the PCI 2.0 specification was released and was the first to establish standards for the connector and motherboard slot. PCI 3.0 is the most recent iteration of the standard; however, it is still under development within the PCI-SIG.

PCI Express
PCI Express (PCIe) is the latest I/O interconnect technology standard for PC expansion cards, and it was designed to ultimately replace conventional PCI standards. PCIe is used in consumer and industrial applications, including linking motherboard-mounted peripherals such as SATA drives, USB ports and sound cards and also as an expansion card for add-in boards.

PCIe uses point-to-point serial links, while earlier versions of the PCI standard use a parallel bus architecture. This makes bidirectional data transfer possible, enhancing performance when several device pairs are communicating simultaneously. PCIe remains compatible with legacy PCI solutions – a PCIe device can be used with older hardware based on earlier PCI specifications.

PCIe 1.0 and 2.0
PCIe technology is continuously developing and improving. In 2004, Intel first introduced the PCIe 1.0 specification. A version 1.1 soon followed, offering minor revisions to the specification.

In 2007, PCI-SIG announced availability of the PCIe 2.0 specification. This doubled the data rate of each lane and remained backward compatible with PCIe 1.1, so that last generation cards would still be able to work in machines with PCIe 2.0 slots.

ExpressCard
ExpressCard technology is a standard introduced in 2003. The ExpressCard standard delivers a thin, fast and light modular expansion to PC users. Consumers can add memory, wired and wireless communications cards and security devices to computers by inserting these cards into their systems. All ExpressCard slots accommodate modules designed to use PCIe or Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0).

The ExpressCard slot has been inclu
1000
ded on mid- to high-range laptops including Apple’s MacBook Pro line. Because laptops often only have one expansion slot, replacing the PC card slot with an ExpressCard slot results in a loss of compatibility with PC-card peripherals.

A PCIe card can fit into a slot of its size or larger. The number of lanes connected to a slot may be fewer than the number supported by the slot size. This allows for PCIe cards to be used without requiring the motherboard hardware to support the full transfer rate, which keeps down design and implementation costs.

PCI Express Benefits
Nearly all graphics cards released by ATI and NVIDIA use PCIe for connectivity to the PC’s motherboard. NVIDIA leverages the high bandwidth data transfer capabilities of PCIe for its multi-GPU technology, which allows several graphics cards of the same chipset and model to run simultaneously, improving performance. ATI has also developed a multi-GPU system based on PCIe.

One theoretical application for External PCIe is giving a laptop computer the graphics capabilities of a desktop computer, by connecting the laptop to an External PCIe desktop video card. However, market development of external graphics solutions has been slow, and the use-case remains largely theoretical.

PCIe is often used for disk array controllers, onboard Ethernet and Wi-Fi, though add-in cards are typically conventional PCI. Because sound cards, modems, serial port cards and other cards with low-speed interfaces still use PCI, most motherboards supporting PCIe also offer conventional PCI slots.

PCIe 3.0
The next advancement in the widespread PCIe standard is PCIe 3.0. The future standard will offer double the bandwidth of PCIe 2.0, enabling higher data transfer speeds between the motherboard and devices. PCIe 3.0 is currently in development by the PCI-SIG and is anticipated to be released in Q2 2010. The PCI 3.0 specification will go through rigorous technical examination and evaluation before it is released to the industry. PCIe 3.0 offers backward compatibility with previous generations of PCI technology.

PCI Express Standards Testing
PCIe standards testing is used to test PCIe systems and add-in cards. Five PCIe compliance testing areas include:

Electrical testing: examines platform and add-in card signal quality
Configuration testing: examines configuration space of devices on add-in cards and checks for specification compliance
Link protocol testing: tests add-in Card compliance for Link protocol spec requirements
Transaction protocol testing: tests add-in Card compliance for Link Transaction protocol spec requirements
Platform BIOS testing: tests platform BIOS ability to recognize and configure devices

Another related test is PCIe compatibility testing, where several PCIe cards and systems are prepared to test whether PCIe devices are compatible with other products.

For PCIe 3.0 systems, add-in cards or devices to be placed on the Integrators List, the system or product must pass interoperability and compliance testing, and the vendor must submit a Product Listing Request Form for the tested device or system. The PCI-SIG Compliance Program is consistently rated the most significant benefit of PCI-SIG membership.

Working with a third-party testing facility will ensure that the product or system can comply with PCI compliance testing. For more information about PCIe standards testing, visit the PCI-SIG web site.

5) Quick Mac OS X guide

(a) Operating system

Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard is the operating system of your MacBook Air. It controls your files, applications and connected devices. It works in a comparable way to Windows.

(b) Basic controls

The basic controls are your keyboard and trackpad. If you’re more used to Windows, you’ll find that you’ll need to use the keyboard and trackpad fewer times to achieve similar results.

(c) Central features

The icons, layouts and navigation of the MacBook Air screens are straightforward. Along with the windows, menus, folders and shortcuts, are four central features that help you work quickly and simply:

Desktop
Dock
Finder
Menu bar

Desktop

Desktop is the screen you start with each time you use your MacBook Air. Use it to store such things as files, folders and pictures.

The first icon you’ll see on Desktop is the Macintosh HD (hard drive). When you use other functions of your MacBook Air, further HD icons appear. Double-click an icon to view its files and applications.

Please note the following.

When you connect a peripheral device to your MacBook Air, an icon appears on the Desktop
If you have different users for your MacBook Air, Mac OS X gives each one a Desktop
Desktop always lies behind the applications that you run

Dock

The Dock is a row of icons along the bottom of your screen. Click on these icons to access your folders, applications and windows.

Note that when a window appears, it has three coloured buttons in the top left corner.

Red closes the window
Yellow minimises the window to the Dock
Green maximises and minimises the size of the window
< 1000
br />
Finder

The Finder is an icon on the far left of the Dock. Use it to navigate and manage your MacBook Air’s folders, files and applications.

Menu Bar
The Mac OS X Menu Bar is a single line at the top of the screen.

Use the Menu Bar to

view recent work
view and change settings and applications
close applications
interact with a programme
log in
log out
start the sleep mode
begin restart
switch off your MacBook Air

The Menu Bar changes to match the application you’re using.

Connectivity

Your MacBook Air has a headphone jack, USB 2.0 port, and a Micro-DVI port concealed in a hatch on the right-hand side. You also receive a Micro-DVI to VGA adaptor and a Micro-DVI to DVI adaptor with your MacBook Air. Use the ports and adaptors to connect a range of peripheral devices such as printers, cameras and hard drives. Alternatively use the Bluetooth® wireless connection.

7) Battery power

You can run your MacBook Air directly from an electricity supply by using the 45W MagSafe Power Adaptor. Alternatively use the built-in battery.

The time between battery charges varies according to the applications you use and the drain on power caused by peripheral devices. If you don’t need a wireless connection, you can turn off AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth® to help extend the battery’s charge.

Connect the MagSafe Power Adaptor once the battery begins to run low. The adaptor works when the MacBook Air is on, in sleep mode, or off. To recharge your MacBook Air as quickly as possible, however, turn the computer off or put it in sleep mode.

The amber light on the MagSafe Power Adaptor tells you that you must charge the battery. The green light indicates that charging is complete. The battery icon in the Menu Bar shows you the battery charge level.

Please note: you cannot change your MacBook Air battery yourself. Only an Apple authorised dealer can replace it.
