Why does my laptop screen turn black when I turn it on?

I have an HP dv9000 laptop and when I turn it on, the screen stays black. I’ve hooked it up to an external monitor and the computer loads and the screen starts to show. Until I get to the desktop. Then it turns black again. Without the external monitor the laptops back light turns on for about 60 seconds then turns off. What is the problem?

I also have a dv9000 that wa sbught about a year and a half ago. When i turn it on the screen turns on but goes black. I can only open up in safe mode. I was told i had to replace the screen because the lcd crystals had gone bad. Hope this helps.
